Power4Production (P4P) - Industry 4.0

In the course of the state government’s industrial policy lead process ‘Saarland Industrieland’ under the guiding theme ‘How we can win the future with industry’, various fields of action were decided. These include, among other things, the digitization of production, energy, securing skilled workers, industry and promotion as well as infrastructure and settlement policy. A contribution to this strategy and to securing the location of production in the Saarland is the Saarland Competence Centre for innovative production technologies in the context of Industry 4.0 ‘Power4Production’, which started operations in October 2015.

objective

At the heart of Power4Production (P4P) is the intelligent networking of products and production environments of industrial value creation.
The first step involves topics such as direct communication between workpiece and machine and human-robot communication (HRC) in connection with so-called cyber-physical production systems. In addition, there are questions relating to topics such as robust networks, cloud computing and energy efficiency in production.

approach

The resulting center is a cooperation between the Center for Mechatronics and Automation Technology (ZeMA) and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) at the site in Saarbrücken.
The scientific management is carried out by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Wahlster (DFKI) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Müller (ZeMA). Through the equal cooperation and the research priorities of both partners, Power4Production brings together information and communication technologies as well as innovative production technologies.
The main focus of the industry is on the automotive industry and its suppliers. The focus of the Centre's work is on innovative production technologies, including the following topics:
• Networking of product and production environment
• Human-robot cooperation
• Cyber-physical production systems
• Embedded systems
• etc.
The Centre implements these topics in industry- and application-oriented research.

Results / Project status

With its launch in October 2015, the Centre was under construction, with activities including the establishment of a network with other stakeholders from industry and academia, consulting, external representation of the Centre, and project acquisition and support.
At the centre, the Industry 4.0 project SmartF-IT (‘Cyber-Physical IT systems for managing the complexity of a new generation of multi-adaptive factories’) is currently being supervised and a further Industry 4.0 project followed with NeWiP (‘New ways of information-led production’) on 1 January 2016.
Further information on the SmartF-IT project can be found on the DFKI website

Recovery concept:

Power4Production is to become a platform for interested companies in the field of innovative production technologies and Industry 4.0 through its work priorities and activities.
The work focuses on the transfer of results from application-oriented research to industry and joint cooperation in research projects in order to solve specific tasks of industry. The result is a platform that transfers scientific know-how to industry through workshops, events, demonstrators and research projects.
