Mittelstand 4.0 - Competence Center Saarbrücken

problem

In the south-west of Germany – the region in and around Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate – the proportion of industrial jobs related to automotive engineering, mechanical and plant engineering, and steel production and processing is more pronounced than anywhere else.

While large companies have already placed themselves in a good position with regard to the necessary digitalisation, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and production-related craft enterprises are threatened with being left behind unless the necessary support is provided through demand-oriented digitalisation. In order for these companies to be able to keep up with the developments and requirements of the market with regard to networking and digitalisation and thus ensure their competitiveness, additional digital skills are required on the part of companies. However, there is often a lack of knowledge about where, when and how digitization and Industry 4.0 technologies can be used economically.
In order to support specifically affected companies in the region, central contact persons are therefore needed. For this purpose, the Mittelstand 4.0 Competence Centre Saarbrücken has been in place since 1 September 2017 as part of the BMWi funding initiative ‘Mittelstand 4.0 – Digitale Produktion- und Arbeitprozess’ (SMEs 4.0 – Digital Production and Work Processes).

objective

The SME 4.0 Competence Center Saarbrücken aims to build up the digitalization capability in SMEs and production-related craft enterprises and, as a result, to strengthen the regional economic structure and competitiveness.
For this purpose, competences from production and information technology from the Saarland research environment are bundled and made available together with transfer partners for operational practice. Employees from different areas find competent contacts for problems along the value chain as well as targeted further training measures in the context of digitization.
For the exchange of experience in dealing with new digital technologies and to support the introduction, information and awareness-raising are a pillar in the focus of the competence center. In addition, numerous partners are involved and the exchange of all target groups is specifically promoted through innovative event formats such as mentoring programs.
